| The Old Garden Roses
have survived cheerfully in gardens over many centuries with little
care. Old Roses have an inherent beauty that you will love.
Rose Culture: Old Garden Roses are best if planted in a rich well drained soil. They need at least six hours or more of sun a day. When planting the roses make sure that they are at the same ground level, loosen root ball, firm soil well and water thoroughly to remove air pockets. Mulch several times a year. Old Garden Roses are usually drought tolerant, but your plants will do best with a soaking every 7 - 10 days. If your Old Garden Roses are properly situated they are virtually trouble-free. They are disease resistant but rarely completely disease free. The difference being that the fungus diseases really doesn't debilitate them. The only insect problems we have had were aphids on the new growth which we use soap and water (1 teas. dish detergent per quart of water) and on a couple of varieties we had beetles which we dusted one time lightly with seven dust and that's it! Repeat blooming varieties should be lightly pruned to deadhead spent flowers throughout the growing season. In late January you can prune back canes by one third. We use Osmocote here at the nursery even though there are many commercial and organic fertilizers that produce good results. All of our roses are vegetatively propagated. We hope that you enjoy them as much as we do. We keep collecting them, we have about 185 varieties so far. The Old Garden Roses are for today's busy homeowners. |
